Can Yogurt Fight Gum Disease?
Lactobacillus reuteri, a probiotic that can be found in many fermented dairy products, has been shown to increase the efficacy of gum disease treatment by 53 percent. In studies conducted on patients with chronic periodontitis, lactobacillus reuteri showed to be just as effective as antibiotics at fighting infection below the gum line. However, unlike antibiotics, probiotics including lactobacillus reuteri occur naturally in the human body and have no potentially harmful side effects.
Houston dentist Dr. Scott Young recommends taking all available options to fight gum disease once it occurs, but encourages taking steps to prevent its occurrence in the first place. Brushing after every meal and snack, flossing morning and night, and visiting our office every six months for cleanings and examinations remain the most effective tools against gum disease.
While there is no evidence that probiotic use can assist in the prevention of gum disease, there is significant evidence that dairy products can help strengthen and protect teeth. Dr. Young would be happy to discuss this with you in greater detail during your next regularly scheduled appointment.
