How do Teeth Remain Strong?

Unlike bone, teeth are not comprised of living cells and therefore cannot regenerate after they have been broken. But new research into dentin – the calcified tissue underneath tooth enamel – has shown how tiny nanoparticle and fiber structures that comprise this porous material help keep teeth strong.

With the help of nanofocused X-ray beams produced by synchrotron-based diffraction equipment, researchers were able to watch collagen fibers within dentin shrink in response to nanoparticle compression when a tooth was damaged. This function keeps trauma such as cracks from spreading while helping to strengthen the overall structure of the tooth. Researchers believe this may explain why natural teeth are more resilient than artificial options such as dental crowns and suggest these findings reinforce the importance of preserving natural teeth whenever possible.

Houston dentist Dr. Scott Young takes every step possible to preserve natural teeth, even when they have become damaged through trauma and decay.
