Protecting Your Teeth While Traveling
As Houston-area cosmetic dentists, we at Scott Young, DDS constantly urge our patients to maintain solid dental hygiene in their day-to-day lives. But we know that travel presents a special challenge; patients are frequently rushing to get from one place to another and routines are disrupted. So much of dental hygiene relies upon turning the process into a habit, and travel tends to break those good habits.
After vacations or business trips, many patients come to Dr. Young with the consequences of these changes. But there are a few steps Houston residents traveling outside the area can take to guarantee their teeth stay healthy on the trip.
- Talk to your dentist – Before heading on a lengthy trip, talk to Dr. Young and his staff about proper hygiene. This is especially important if you haven’t had a cleaning in a while. We can advise you on whether you should get a cleaning before leaving.
- Prepare – Put together a small bag dedicated to dental supplies alone: toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, and anything else you might need. If you’re flying, you can purchase small “travel-size” versions of toothpaste and mouthwash that you can take on the plane.
- Make a routine – Travelling disrupts our routines and habits. But if you prepare ahead of time and consult your schedule, you’ll be able to carve out time in the morning and evening for proper dental hygiene. Get into the habit of brushing and flossing before you shower in the morning and go to bed at night; that way, you won’t be rushed and find yourself tempted to neglect your teeth.
